Etymology: Von Epich. als μεγαλοχάσμων charakterisiert, mithin vielleicht zu χανεῖν gähnen (s. χάσκω) mit volkstümlichexpressiver Gemination (Strömberg Fischn. 53 m. Lit.). Zweifel bei Thompson Fishes s.v. (m. ausführlicher Behandlung), wo fremder Ursprung (ägypt. chnā N. eines unbek. Fisches) mit volksetymologischer Umdeutung in Erwägung gezogen wird.
