[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Σχηματισμός σε -της, που κατά τον Πλίνιο προήλθε από Γάγας ή Γάγαι, ονομασία πόλεως και ποταμού της Λυκίας. Από τη λ. γαγάτης προήλθε και το λατ. gagātēs, απ' όπου και τα νεώτερα γαλλ. jais, γερμ. Gagať].
