Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Uncertain. Acc. to Solmsen l. c. from *ἐρσήν and so differing only in accent from Ion. ἔρσην; the lengthening would be be due to the oxytonation (Wackernagel KZ 29, 127ff. = Kl. Schr. 1, 630ff.). Strict Laconian one would expect, as Bechtel Dial. 2, 370f. notes, *ἠρήν. - Not to ἦρι early, nor to εἰρήνη (s. v.).
