A steam and odour of fat which exhales from roasting meat, smell or savour of a burnt sacrifice (ἡ λιπαροῦ θυμίασις, opp. λιγνύς, Arist.Mete.387b6, cf. 388a5); κνίση δ' οὐρανὸν ἷκεν ἑλισσομένη περὶ καπνῷ Il.1.317; κνίσην δ' ἐκ πεδίου ἄνεμοι φέρον οὐρανὸν εἴσω 8.549, cf.Ar.Av.193, 1517: generally, odour of savoury meat, Id.Ach.1045 (lyr.), Alex.261.4; αἱ ἐκ τῶν αἱμάτων καὶ σαρκῶν κ. Porph. Abst.2.42; of eructations, Xenocr. ap. Orib.2.58.152. II that which causes this smell, fat caul (cf. κνῖσα· ἐπίπλους, AB1095), in which the flesh of the victim was wrapped and burnt, μηρούς τ' ἐξέταμον κατά τε κνίσῃ ἐκάλυψαν Il.1.460, cf.
