Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: surpass, outstrip, also trade (Pi.). Cf. Bechtel Dial. 2, 778 exchange.
Other forms: διαμευστάς· ἀλαζόνας H.; διαμευτής· ψεύστης, ἀπατεών H.
Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [743] *h₂meu(H)-? move, push
Etymology: The basic meaning is uncertain; see DELG. One compares ἀμύνω (improbable), further Lat. moveo, Lith. máuju máuti tear off, Skt. mī́vati move, push (from *miH-(e)u-, the Greek form continuing *mieu-); all rather uncertain. If IE, the root may be *h₂meu-.
