Etymology: The basic meaning is uncertain; see DELG. One compares ἀμύνω (improbable), further Lat. moveo, Lith. máuju máuti tear off, Skt. mī́vati move, push (from *miH-(e)u-, the Greek form continuing *mieu-); all rather uncertain. If IE, the root may be *h₂meu-.
