Frisk Etymology German

ἐπῴχατο: {epōíkhato}
Grammar: v.
Meaning: nur Μ 340 πᾶσαι γὰρ ἐπῴχατο (scil. πύλαι) sie waren nämlich alle geschlossen.
Etymology : Wahrscheinlich mit Wackernagel Gött. Nachr. 1902, 737ff. = Kl. Schr. 1, 127ff. (Syntax 2, 183) 3. sg. Med. Plusquamperf. von ἐποιγνύναι im Sinn von schließen mit Aspiration des Gutturals (Schwyzer 771). Zur Bedeutung vgl. besonders (τὴν θύραν) προσέῳξεν er schloß ab (LXX Ge. 19, 6); nähere Begründung bei Wackernagel a. a. O., wo auch über andere Deutungsvorschläge (zu ἔχω, mit Zugrundelegung der schlechteren Lesart ἐπώχατο). — S. auch Bechtel Lex. s. οἴγνυμι.
