Dor. εὐφᾱμέω, (εὔφημος)

   A use words of good omen, opp. δυσφημέω:    I avoid all unlucky words, during sacred rites: hence, as the surest mode of avoiding them, keep a religious silence, φέρτε δὲ χερσὶν ὕδωρ εὐφημῆσαί τε κέλεσθε Il.9.171, cf. Call.Ap.17, 18, etc.; mostly imper., εὐφήμει, εὐφημεῖτε, hush! be still! Ar.Nu.297, Ach. 241, al.; οἱ δὲ ἀμβώσαντες μέγα εὐφημέειν μιν ἐκέλευον Hdt.3.38; εὐφημεῖν χρὴ τὸν πρεσβύτην Ar.Nu.263; εὐφήμει τοῦτό γε, ἦν δ' ἐγώ Pl.
