A depart from a judgement, give up a design or intention of doing, τοῦ μάχεσθαι X.An.1.7.19, cf. Plb.1.29.5, etc.; ἀ. τὸ κατὰ γῆν πορεύεσθαι X.HG7.5.7; ἀ. διώκειν Plu.Ant.34, cf. Thes.6; ἀ. μὴ βοηθεῖν resolve not to help, D.15.9, cf.IG22.457.30: c.gen., give up a notion, Simp. in Ph.610.9. II c. gen. rei, despair of, τῆς ἐλενθερίας Lys.2.46; οὐδενὸς χρὴ πράγματος ὅλως ἀπογνῶναι Men.131; ὡς ἀνιάτων D.Chr.32.97; ὑπὲρ σφῶν Jul.Or.2.61c: abs., despair, D.4.42 (where some codd. supply ἑαυτῶν), Babr.43.18: c. fut. inf., αἱρήσειν ἀ.
