Russian (Dvoretsky)

γᾰλεός: ὁ пятнистая акула Arst., Plut.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: dogfish, shark (Pl. Com.), also = γαλέη (Aret.).
Derivatives: γαλεώδης like a shark (Arist.), γαλεώτης swordfish (Plb.; s. below), also γαλαξίας = γαλεός (Gal.); connection with γαλαξίας milky way unclear; bemerkenswertes Kompositum γαλεώνυμος = γαλεός (Phylotim. ap. Gal.), cf. also καλλιώνυμος name of a fish, s. Strömberg Fischnamen 108f. Frisk and DELG (s.v. γαλέη) suggest a contamination and tabu: unclear to me.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: That the dogfish was called after the weasel was advocated by Strömberg l.c., but the formation of γαλεός is unclear (backformation from γαλεώτης after ἀσκαλαβώτης : ἀσκάλαβος?). - On γαλεός see Thompson Fishes s. v.
