   A thick smoke mixed with flame, murky fire (such as is made by burning resinous substances, Arist.Mete.387b6, al.), ἱέντα . . διὰ στόμα λιγνὺν μέλαιναν A.Th.494; στέροψ λ., of the fires seen by night on the two peaks of Parnassus, S.Ant.1127 (lyr.); λ. σῶμα καταιθαλοῖ Ar.Av.1241; λ. καὶ καπνός Id. Lys.319; λιγνὺς πρόσεδρος S.Tr.794, expld. by Sch. of the smoke of the altar hanging round Heracles: pl., αἱ φλόγες καὶ αἱ λ. Plb.34.11.18, cf.
