As the absence of palatalition in Skt. <b class="b2">khañj-</b>, if for <b class="b2">*skañj-</b>, prob. points to a, for <b class="b3">σκάζω</b> beside the gener. assumed basic form <b class="b2">skn̥g-i̯ō</b> also <b class="b2">*skang-i̯ō</b> is a possibility. An IE <b class="b2">a-</b>vowel would not surprise in this popular word. Germ. [[hinkan]], which also deviates in anlaut, wouls then be unorig.; s. on this Sommer Sprachgesch. u.
