Hdt.l.c., Paus.6.26.6:—hemp, Cannabis sativa, S.Fr.243, Hdt.l.c., Dsc.3.148, etc. (but κ. ἀγρία hemp-mallow, Althaea cannabina, ib.149): in pl., -ίδες hemp-seed, Ephipp.13.6; burnt and used to medicate vapour baths, Hdt.4.75:—hence κανναβισθῆναι take a vapour-bath, Hsch. (Cf. OE. hænep 'hemp', Skt. śahás 'a kind of hemp', etc.; borrowed perh. fr. Ugro-Finnish, cf. Čeremissian ke[ndot ]e, ki[ndot ]e 'hemp' and Syrianian pïš 'hemp'.)
