μή, φίλα ψυχά, βίον ἀθάνατον σπεῦδε, τὰν δ' ἔμπρακτον ἄντλει μαχανάν → Oh! my soul do not aspire to eternal life, but exhaust the limits of the possible. | Do not yearn, O my soul, for immortal life! Use to the utmost the skill that is yours. | Do not, my soul, strive for the life of the immortals, but exhaust the practical means at your disposal.

English (LSJ)

κληρωσώμεθα (Laconian), Hsch.

Spanish (DGE)

lacon. κληρωσώμεθα Hsch.

• Etimología: Se admite gener. la rel. c. μέρος, μείρομαι qq.u. de un tema μερ-ν- y disim., aunque persisten algunas dudas.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: κληρωσώμεθα. Λάκωνες H.
Other forms: Cf. βερρέαι κληρῶσαι H., which may be corrupt.
Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Kretschmer KZ 35, 605 and Fraenkel Glotta 2, 37 connect μέρος, μείρομαι with dissimilation from μερ-ν- (otherwise Osthoff IF 6, 8ff.). V. Blumenthal Glotta 18, 153f. argues for Illyrian (cf. φερνή; also comparing βερωνετῶν ἀλλὰ ἀνετῶν H., Hesychstudien 3).

Frisk Etymology German

βερνώμεθα: {bernṓmetha}
Meaning: κληρωσώμεθα. Λάκωνες H.
Etymology : Dazu das irgendwie entstellte βερρέαι· κληρῶσαι. — Wahrscheinlich mit Kretschmer KZ 35, 605 und Fraenkel Glotta 2, 37 zu μέρος, μείρομαι durch Dissimilation aus μερν- (eine andere lautliche Erklärung bei Osthoff IF 6, 8ff.). Nach v. Blumenthal Glotta 18, 153f. dagegen illyrisch, vgl. zunächst φερνή Mitgift. Auch in βερωνετῶν· ἀλλὰ ἀνετῶν H. will v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 3 ein illyrisch-messapisches βέρ’ = φέρ(ε) finden.
