   A coot, Fulica atra, so called from its bald white head, Ar.Ach.875, Av.565 (anap., in Ion. form), Arist. HA593b16 (v.l. φαληρίς), Fr.350, Alex.Mynd. ap. Ath.9.395e; φαληρίδες ταριχηραί Cleomenesap.eund.9.393c.    II canary grass, Phalaris nodosa, Dsc.3.142 (both forms in codd.); phaleri (sic), Plin. HN27.126.

[Seite 1253] ίδος, ἡ, ion. φαληρίς, das Wasserhuhn, nach seiner kahlen, weißen Platte benannt; Ar. Av. 565 (in der ion. Form) Ach. 854; Eubul. bei Ath. III, 108 b. Nach Buttmann Lexil. II p. 248 war der Vogel schwarz, mit weißer Blesse auf dem Kopfe, wie das Bleßhuhn. – Bei Plin. H. N. 27, 12 eine Grasart, deren Aehre vielleicht an den Helmbusch erinnerte.
