   A cavern, grotto, Od.5.57, etc.; ὑπὸ σ. ἤλασε μῆλα Il.4.279; [Κύκλωπες] οἴκεον ἐν σπήεσσι Od.9.400; ἐν σπέσσι γλαφυροῖσι ib.114; νῆα . . ὡρμίσαμεν κοῖλον σ. εἰσερύσαντες 12.317.—Hom. uses only the following forms: nom.and acc. sg. σπέος, Il.13.32, ll.cc.; irreg. dat. σπῆϊ 18.402, Od.2.20,al., cf.
