Etymology: Hoffmann, BB 18, 287 compared Skt. ábhri- hoe, pickaxe, which Wackernagel accepts, s. Latte's Hesychius. But Szemerényi, Gnomon 43, 1971, 658 rightly asks whether the meanings are compatible.
