   A winged, flying, ἐν ποτανοῖς among fowls, Pi.N.3.80; π. οἰωνοί E.Hel.1478 (lyr.); πέδιλα Id.El.460 (lyr.); π. εἴ σέ τις θεῶν κτίσαι Id.Supp.620 (lyr.), cf. 1142 (lyr.): prov. of vain pursuits, διώκει παῖς ποτανὸν ὄρνιν A.Ag.394 (lyr.): metaph., ποτανὸς ἐν Μοίσαισι, i.e. soaring in the arts of the Muses, Pi.P.5.114; ποτανᾷ μαχανᾷ by soaring art, i.e. by poesy, Id.N.7.22; ἐμᾷ ποτανὸς ἀμφὶ μαχανᾷ Id.P. 8.34; ποταναὶ (v.l. ποτ' αἰναὶ) τευθίδες Epich.61.—Dor. for ποτηνός, which occurs only in Poet. ap.
