A buoy up with hope, αὐτοὺς θειάσαντες ἐπήλπισαν, ὡς λήψονται Th.8.1, cf. Anon. ap. Suid. s.v. Πυθαγόρας, Longin.44.2, Luc. DMort.5.2. II intr., ἐ. τινί pin one's hopes upon, hope in, Hld.7.26; ἐπί τινι D.C.41.11: abs., Luc.Tim.21; but also, 2 merely, = ἐλπίζω, E.Hipp.1011, Ph.1.74, al.; hope besides, Th.8.54 (v.l. ἐλπίζων).
