A sputum, saliva, Id.Aph.1.12 (-ελ-), Prog.15 (-ελ-), Acut.66 (-αλ-), al., Arist.HA607a30, GA747a10:—also πτύελος, ὁ, Id.EE1235a38, LXX Jb.7.19, Hsch. s.v. σίαλος.—The forms in πτυαλ- and πτυελ- are found in codd. of Hp. (v. Kuehlewein i p.cvi) and of later writers; in those of Arist. the latter only is found.
