Frisk Etymological English

-ύος
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: dust, ashes (Cyrene); (Hp. Nat. Mul. 88).
Other forms: cf. ἴκνυον κονίαν, σμῆμα H. and ἰγνύς id. (Hp. Nat. Mul. 88).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Formation like λιγνύς smoke, soot. Acc. to v. Blumenthal Hesychstud. 39 to IE seikʷ- dry (Pok. 894). Cf. W.-Hofmann s. ignia, which comes from Greek. The variation proves a Pre-Greek word. Fur. 118 compares λιγνύς (above), without referring to his p. 391 on λ/0. (He further compares 298 λιγνύς with ἀλισγέω pollute, which I find formally difficult).
