   A great sea-perch, Epinephelus gigas, still called ὀρφός in Greece, Ar.V.493, Pl.Com.56, 173.13, Cratin.147, Amips.8, Arist.HA543b1, 591a11, Numen. ap. Ath.7.315b, cf. 295b, Olymp. in Grg.p.360 J. ; orphus rubens, Plin.HN32.152. (Nom. sg. -φώς Arist.HA543b1 (-φός 591a11): Hdn.Gr.1.224 has ὄρφος κοινῶς, ὀρφῶς δὲ Ἀττικῶς, cf. Hsch.; but Ath.7.315b states that nom. Att. is ὀρφώς, citing Archipp.17; gen. sg. ὀρφώ Cratin.l.c., acc. -φών Pl. Com.173.13, dat. pl. -φῷσι Id.56, Amips. l.c., acc. pl. -φώς Ar.l.c.)
