English (LSJ)
ὁ, A purple stripe down the front of the χιτών, Ar.Fr.320.2, Pherecr.100. II neckband, ὄχθοιβοι χρυσία ἔχοντες IG12.387.35, cf. 22.1388.84, 1400.67; ὄ. ὃν ἡ θεὸς ἔχει ἐπὶ τῷ τραχήλῳ ib.1425.309.
German (Pape)
150Β, 32 κἑξ.
Russian (Dvoretsky)
ὄχθοιβος: ὁ пурпурная передняя кайма на нижнем крае хитона Arph.
Frisk Etymological English
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: purple stripe or edge of a chiton (Ar., Pherecr.); tuft neckband (Att. inscr.; cf. Kretschmer Glotta 16, 169 w. lit.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Technical word with β-suffix as e.g. in κόσυμβος, κόλλαβος (s. vv. w. lit.). Connection with ὄχθη high edge seems possible; thus Grošelj (s. on ὄχθη) with improbable connection with Av. vaγδana-'head'. Not better Kretschmer l.c. Cf. also οἶβος (Luc. Lex. 3) ?; after Poll. τοῦ τραχήλου τοῦ βοὸς τὸ κάλλιστον. -- No doubt a Pre-Greek word; cf. Furnée 321.
Frisk Etymology German
ὄχθοιβος: {ókhthoibos}
Grammar: m.
Meaning: ‘purpurner Streifen od. Rand am Chiton’ (Ar., Pherekr.); Bommelhalsband (att. Inschr.; vgl. Kretschmer Glotta 16, 169 m. Lit.).
Etymology : Technisches Wort mit β-Suffix wie z.B. in κόσυμβος, κόλλαβος (s. dd. m. Lit.). Beziehung zu ὄχθη hoher Rand scheint an sich möglich; ähnlich Grošelj (s. zu ὄχθη) mit unwahrscheinlichem Anschluß an aw. vaγδana-’Kopf’. Nicht besser Kretschmer a. O. Vgl. auch οἶβος (Luk. Lex. 3) ?; nach Poll. τοῦ τραχήλου τοῦ βοὸς τὸ κάλλιστον.
