German (Pape)

[Seite 1448] ύος, ἡ, die Schildkröte, Anton. Lib. 32.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

Frisk Etymological English

-ύος
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: turtle (Ant. Lib. 32, 2, H.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: For the formation cf. the synonymous χέλυς, ἐμύς. Orig. prob. foreign word, but connected with κλέμμα (κλέπτω) because turtles can hide their body partly or completely under the armour(?) . Cf. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 144: cross of ἐμύς and *κλωμός = Skt. kūrmá- turtle (IE?; cf. Mayrhofer KEWA s. v.) with -μμ- from κλέμμα. - Far-fetched suggestion. Fur. 131 compares κρέμυς a fish with a very hard head and χρέμυς ὁ ὀνίσκος ἰχθύς H.; this confims that the word is Pre-Greek. How do we know about a connection with κλέμμα? On geminates Fur. 387, where this word can be added.

Frisk Etymology German

κλεμμύς: -ύος
{klemmús}
Grammar: f.
Meaning: Schildkröte (Ant. Lib. 32, 2, H.).
Etymology : Zur Bildung vgl. die synonymen χέλυς, ἐμύς. Ursprünglich wohl Fremdwort, aber mit κλέμμα (κλέπτω) verbunden wegen der Fähigkeit der Schildkröte, ihren Körper ganz oder teilweise unter den Panzer einzuziehen und zu verbergen. Vgl. Güntert Reimwortbildungen 144: Kreuzung von ἐμύς und *κλωμός = aind. kūrmá- Schildkröte (indogermanisch?; vgl. Mayrhofer Wb. s. v.) mit -μμ- nach κλέμμα.
