εως, ἡ, name of cities in the Libyan desert, Hdt.3.26, Olymp.Hist.p.464 D. ; cf. Αὔασις :—hence Ὀασῖται, οἱ, Ptol.Geog. 4.5.25 : Adj. Ὀασιτικός, ή, όν, PSI4.433.6 (iii B. C.).

Ὄασις: -εως, ἡ, τόπος εὔφορος καὶ κατῳκημένος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῆς Λιβύης, ἀποτελῶν οὕτως εἰπεῖν χλοερὰν νῆσον ἐν μέσῳ τῆς ξηρᾶς καὶ ἀμμώδους ἐρήμου, Ἡρόδ. 3. 26, ἔνθα ἴδε Bähr. (Τὸ ὄνομα εἶναι πιθανῶς Ἀραβικὸν (vah)· ὁ τύπος Αὔασις, ἀπαντᾷ παρὰ Στράβ. 130, ὅπερ ἴσως εἶναι ἁπλῶς ἀπόπειρα πρὸς Ἑλληνικὴν ἐτυμολογίαν τῆς λέξεως οἱονεὶ ἐκ τοῦ αὔω, αὐαίνω).
