Etymology: Ending like ἄλσος a.o.; without certain etymology. By Curtius 280 (with Bopp a.o.; agreeing also Solmsen Wortforsch. 245) connected with πίνω and cognates. Diff., semantically better, Fick 3, 241 (also Bq, WP. 2, 75, Pok. 794): from *πῖδ-σ-ος to πῖδαξ, πιδύω etc.; s. vv, rejected by Furnée 260 n. 48 and 254 n. 27.
