[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ο τ. μαίτυς αντί μάρτυς από τους τ. τών πλάγιων πτώσεων, όπου το πρώτο -ρ- ανομοιωτικά προς το ακολουθούν -ρ- («υποχωρητική ανομοίωση») εξασθενώθηκε σε -ι-: μάρτυρος > μαίτυρος > μαίτυς.
