   A public ξένος, public guest or friend, made so by an act of the State: Alexander 1 of Macedon was π. καὶ εὐεργέτης of Athens, Hdt.8.136, cf. 143; πρόξενοι ἀμφικτιόνων Pi.I.4(3).8; εἶναι πρόξενον τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Ἀθηναίων Στράτωνα τὸν Σιδῶνος βασιλέα καὶ αὐτὸν καὶ ἐκγόνους IG22.141.9; πρόξενοι καὶ πολῖται Lys.28.1; esp. of persons representing the interests of a foreign state in their own community, Pl.Lg.642b, etc.; opp. φιδιόξενος (q. v.), IG9(1).333.11 (Locr., v B. [Seite 736] ὁ, ion. πρόξεινος, Her., öffentlicher Gastfreund, Gastfreund von Staatswegen, sowohl der Bürger, der von seinem Staate beauftragt ist, den Gesandten eines andern Staates bei sich aufzunehmen, ihm alle Pflichten der Gastfreundschaft zu erweisen u. ihm seine Geschäfte betreiben zu helfen, als auch derjenige, der sich als öffentlicher Gastfreund, wie die Gesandten und Geschäftsträger in einem andern Staate aufhält, Her. 6, 57; es galt auch als ein Ehrentitel, der solchen Fremden, die sich um den Staat Verdienste erworben hatten, ertheilt wurde, wie z. B. Alexander, des Amyntas Sohn von Macedonien, der Athener πρόξεινος καὶ φίλος hieß, 8, 143; od. πρόξεινος καὶ εὐεργέτης, 8, 136; auch derjenige, der das Interesse eines andern Staates nach dazu erhaltenem Auftrage vertritt, wie unsere Consuln u. Residenten, an den sich daher die Bürger jenes Staates, wenn sie an den Ort kamen, wo er sich aufhielt, wenden, um von ihm Beistand u. Rath für die Betreibung ihrer Geschäfte daselbst, auch wohl gastliche Aufnahme zu erhalten; so daß also πρόξενος übh. das zwischen zwei Städten od. Staaten ist, was ξένος zwischen zwei Privatpersonen; vgl. noch Pind. πρόξενοι ἀμφικτιόνων, I. 3, 26; Aesch. Suppl. 414 u. öfter in diesem Stück; φίλης γὰρ προξένου κατήνυσαν, Soph.
