A woodpecker, of which Arist. distinguishes four species, the great black, Picus martius, the green, Picus viridis, and the spotted (both greater and less). Picus major and minor, HA593a5, cf. 614b7, Str.5.4.2; = Lat. picus, D.H.1.14:—also δρυκολάπτης, Ar.Av.480,979; δρῠοκόλαψ, Hsch.
