ἐξ ὀνύχων λέοντα τεκμαίρεσθαι → judge by the claws, judge by a slight but characteristic mark, small traits give the clue to the character of a person, deduce something from a small indication, identify a lion from its claws

A like a starling, i. e. speckled, dappled, ψ. ἵππος a dapple-grey horse, Ar.Nu.1225, LXX Za.1.8; Arist.HA632b19 distinguishes it fr. ποικίλος, which implies that the spots are more distinctly marked:—Comp. ψαρότερος Ael.NA12.28, Aët.11.11.
