A exhort, encourage, cheer on, c. dat., ἐπεκέλευσά σοι E.El.1224 codd.: abs., Id.Ba.1088: c. acc. pers., ἐ. τὸν μὴ διανοούμενον Th.3.82: c. acc. rei cogn., πρὸς τοῖς ἄλλοις κελεύσμασιν ἐ. τόδε εὖ κύνες" X.Cyn.6.20; joined with παρακελεύομαι (which prop. means cheer one on to an act not begun, ἐ. to one already begun), Pl.Phd.61a:—Med., τινὶ παραδιδόναι τὴν ἀρχήν Th.4.28: abs., Plu.
