ὀξῠάκανθα: ἡ Mespilus pyracantha, «δένδρον ἐστὶ παραπλήσιον ἀχράδι, μικρότερον δὲ καὶ ἀκανθῶδες ἄγαν· καρπὸν δὲ φέρει μύρτῳ ἐμφερῆ, ἁδρόν, ἐρυθρόν, εὔθρυπτον, ἔνδοθεν πυρῆνα ἔχοντα, ῥῖζαν πολυσχιδῆ καὶ βαθεῖαν». Διοσκ. 1. 122· ἐν Θεοφρ. π. Φυτ. Ἱστ. 1. 9. 3, κτλ., ὀξυάκανθος. Νῦν ἐν Λακωνικῇ μὲν ἐφύλαξε τὸ ἀρχαῖον ὄνομα, ἐν Πάρῳ δὲ καλεῖται: «μυλκυνιὰ» κατὰ Sibth.
