[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Πρόκειται πιθ. για λ. σημιτικής προέλευσης, η οποία εμφανίζει επίθημα -ωνία, που απαντά και σε άλλα ον. φυτών (πρβλ. μαδ-ωνία)].
