English (LSJ)

αρος (not ᾰτος), τό, Arcadian name for mistletoe, Viscum album, growing on the πρῖνος (here = Quercus coccifera), Thphr. HP 3.16.1, CP2.17.1: ὑφέαρ· τὸ ἐπιφυόμενον ταῖς πεύκαις καὶ ταῖς ἐλάταις, Hsch.

Greek (Liddell-Scott)

ὕφεαρ: -αρος, (οὐχὶ ᾰτος), τό, Ἀρκαδικὸν ὄνομα εἴδους ἰξοῦ ἐπιφυομένου ταῖς πεύκαις καὶ ἐλάταις, Θεοφρ. π. Φυτ. Ἱστ. 3. 16, 1, π. Φυτ. Αἰτ. 2. 17, 1· πρβλ. στελίς.

Frisk Etymology German

ὕφεαρ: -εαρος
{húphear}
Grammar: n.
Meaning: arkad. Name der Mistel, Viscum album (Thphr., H. [wo ὑφαίαρ]).
Etymology : Unerklärt. Nach Prellwitz und Bechtel Dial. 1, 395 aus kypr. ὑ- (s.d.) und *φέϝαρ, Verbalnomen zu ἔφυν, gernäß der Erklärung bei H.: τὸ ἐπιφυόμενον ταῖς πεύκαις καὶ ἐλάταις. Ganz fraglich, da die Hochstufe φευ-im Griech. sonst nicht mit Sicherheit nachgewiesen ist (vgl. zu συφεός). Nach Pisani Ist. Lomb. 73 : 2, 27 σ-lose Variante von σῦφαρ (s.d.).
