Adv., (ἐφίστημι, ἐπιστῆναι)

A standing over each in turn (ἐφιστάμενος ἑκάστῳ EM364.35), i.e. one after another, successively, νείκεον ἄλλοθεν ἄλλον ἐ. Od.12.392; νώμησεν δ' ἄρα πᾶσιν ἐ. 13.54; standing by, A.R.1.293; ἐ. οὐτάζοντες standing up to each other, Id.2.84.—The words of Od.16.453, δόρπον ἐ. ὡπλίζοντο, seem to have given rise to the other expl. of the Sch., ἐπισταμένως, ἐμπείρως (as if from ἐπίσταμαι).
