διάνοια, ἐὰν ἐρευνᾷς τοὺς ἱεροφαντηθέντας λόγους μὲν θεοῦ, νόμους δὲ ἀνθρώπων θεοφιλῶν, οὐδὲν ταπεινὸν οὐδ᾽ ἀνάξιον τοῦ μεγέθους αὐτῶν ἀναγκασθήσῃ παραδέχεσθαι → if, O my understanding, thou searchest on this wise into the oracles which are both words of God and laws given by men whom God loves, thou shalt not be compelled to admit anything base or unworthy of their dignity

   A dead body, corpse, ἔνεροι καὶ ἀλίβαντες Pl.R. 387c, cf. IPE12.519 (Cherson.).    2 dead river, i.e. Styx, S.Fr. 790 (cf. 994).    3 dead wine, i.e. vinegar, Hippon.102; ἔβηξαν οἷον (v.l. οἶνον) ἀλίβαντα (or ἁλίβ-, i.e. οἱ ἀλίβ-) πίνοντες Call.Fr. 88; cf. EM63.52. (Ancient Gramm. derived the word fr. ἀ- priv., λιβάς and gave it the meaning dry, withered, cf. Did. ap. Sch.Ar.Ra. 186, Corn.ND35, Plu.2.736a; the quantity of the first a is dub.)

III, 387 c (Schol. διὰ τὴν λιβάδος ἀμεθεξίαν); Plut. Symp. VIII, 10, 3 verbindet es mit σκελετός, beide Namen seien von der ξηρασία hergenommen; Call. frg. 88 soll nach E. M. οἶνος ἀλ. (entweder todter Wein, der kein Wein ist, oder der sich nicht zu Spenden eignet) Essig sein.
