ιδος, ἡ, (ὤψ) in Il. always epith. of τρυφάλεια, helmet

   A with a tube-like opening between the cheek-pieces (acc. to Sch. with a tube (αὐλός) to hold the λόφος), Il.5.182, al.; λόγχη with a socket to hold the shaft, S.Fr.1027; περικεφαλαία conical, Ath.5.189c, cf. Hsch.

αὐλῶπις: -ιδος, ἡ, (ὢψ), ἐν Ἰλ. αείποτε, αὐλῶπις τρυφάλεια - κατὰ τὸν Ἡσύχ. «εἶδος περικεφαλαίας, παραμήκεις ἐχούσης τὰς τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν (ὀπὰς) καὶ εἰς ὀξὺ ληγούσης· οἱ δὲ ἐκτεταμένον ἔχουσα τὸν λόφον», ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν Σχολ. ἐσήμαινεν αὐλὸν εἰς ὃν προσηρμόζετο ὁ λόφος, αὐλωπίδί τε τρυφαλείῃ, «αὐλίσκον ἐχούσῃ, καθ’ οὗ πήγνυται ὁ λόφος» (Σχόλ.), Ἰλ. Ε. 182, κτλ.· ὁ δὲ Σοφοκλ. (Ἀποσπ. 851) μεταχειρίζεται τὴν λέξιν ἐπὶ λόγχης «αὐλῶπιν· αὐλοὺς ἔχουσαν, Σοφοκλῆς δὲ τὴν λόγχην τὴν μακρὰν αὐλῶπιν εἶπεν» Ἡσύχ.
