Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: f.?
Meaning: οἴκημα Μακεδονικόν, ὅπερ θερμαίνοντες λούονται Suid.
Other forms: ἄργιλλα, ἄργιλα f. subterranean house (Magna Graecia, Strabo V 244 = Ephor. (fr. 45), cf. Eust. ad D.P. 1166).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: To ἄργιλλος white clay? See Kalléris, Anc. Mac. 1, 104. From it Alb. ragáĺ ́cottage, Jokl IF 44, 13ff. Also Pagliaro, Ric. lingu. 1 (1950) 145f.; Hubschmid, Thes. Praerom. 1, 81. The interchange ε/ι and λ/λλ clearly points to a substr. word.

Frisk Etymology German

ἄργελλα: {árgella}
Forms: woneben ἄργιλλα, ἄργιλα f. unterirdische Wohnung (Magna Graecia, Ephor. u. a.).
Meaning: οἴκημα Μακεδονικόν, ὅπερ θερμαίνοντες λούονται Suid.,
Etymology : Daraus alb. ragál ́ Hütte nach Jokl IF 44, 13ff. Sonst unerklärt. Beziehung zu ἄργιλλος weißer Ton scheint fraglich.
