[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Ονομασία ζώου, ιρανικής προέλευσης, που έχει συνδεθεί ετυμολογικά και με τον ομώνυμο ποταμό Τίγρητα (πρβλ. αρχ. περσ. tigrā). Η άποψη ότι η λ. συνδέεται με το αβεστ. tiγri- «βέλος, οξύ άκρο» και το αρχ. περσ. tigra- «οξύς, αιχμηρός» (βλ. λ. στίζω) και η απόδοση στον ποταμό Τίγρητα της ιδιότητας του ορμητικού, του αιχμηρού (πρβλ. το σχόλιο του Στράβωνος: Τίγρις ἄμικτον φυλάσσων τὸ ῥεῦμα διὰ τὴν ὀξύτητα, ἀφ'οὗ καὶ τοὔνομα Μήδων τίγριν καλούντων τὸ τόξευμα), οφείλεται πιθ. σε παρετυμολογία. Τη λ., τέλος, δανείστηκε η Λατινική (πρβλ. tigris), από όπου και άλλες γλώσσες (πρβλ. αγγλ. tiger, γαλλ. tigre, γερμ. Tiger)].
