   A θύρσα AP6.158 (Sabin.): —wand wreathed in ivy and vine-leaves with a pine-cone at the top, carried by the devotees of Dionysus, E.Ba.80 (lyr.), SIG1109.138, Hero Spir.2.9, etc.; also of the devotees themselves, Sch.E.Hec. 261.    II = κλάδος, ῥάβδος, Hsch. (Prob. a loan-word.)

Π. 6. 158: ― ὁ θύρσος, ἤτοι ἡ Βακχικὴ ῥάβδος ἐστεμμένη μὲ κισσὸν καὶ φύλλα ἀμπέλου καὶ ἔχουσα ἐπὶ κορυφῆς κῶνον πίτυος, ἣν ἔφερον οἱ λατρευταὶ τοῦ Βάκχου. πρῶτον ἐν Εὐριπ. Βάκχ. 80, πρβλ. Ἀνθ. ἔνθ’ ἀνωτ., Βεργ. Αἰν. 7. 390, καὶ ἴδε θυρσαχθής, θυρσομανής. ΙΙ. ἑρμηνευόμενον ὡσαύτως παρ’ Ἡσύχ. = κλάδος, ῥάβδος· καὶ τὸ thyrsus ἦν ἐν χρήσει ἐν τῇ Λατ. ὡς = τῷ turio, δηλ. νέος κλάδος, βλαστός.
