Mem. 2, 7, 9, wo die Lesart schwankt, – Bes. in Athen der Bürger, der als Patron eines Nichtbürgers oder μέτοικος (οἱ τῶν μετοίκων Ἀθήνῃσι προεστηκότες προστάται ἐκαλοῦντο, Harpocr., der als den eigentlichen Ausdruck von Seiten der Metöken προστάτην νέμειν anführt) dessen Rechtshändel vor Gericht führte u. ihn in allen bürgerlichen Angelegenheiten vertrat, wonach Soph. sagt ὥςτ' οὐ Κρέοντος προστάτου γεγράψομαι, O. R. 411, ich werde mich nicht als Schützling des Kreon od. ihn als meinen Schutzherrn einschreiben lassen; θεὸν οὐ λήξω ποτὲ προστάταν ἴσχων, 882; Ar. Pax 667 Plut. 920 u. öfter; so bes. bet den attischen Rednern, ἐπὶ προστάτου οἰκεῖν, Lys. 31, 9, von dem Metöken, der in Athen nicht anders sich aufhalten darf, als wenn er einen προστάτης hat; vgl. Dem. 25, 58; Arist. u. Folgde; προστάτην ἐπέγραφον, Luc. Peregr. 11; dem röm. patronus entsprechend, Plut. Rom. 13 Mar. 5. – Aber προστάτης θεοῦ ist der vor einen Gott tritt, um ihn anzuflehen, Soph. O. C. 1173. 1280. – Bei Xen. Cyr. 3, 3, 41 sind οἱ προστάται = οἱ ἔμπροσθεν, die im Vordertreffen, den οὐραγοί entgeggstzt.
