In dieser Stelle ist nicht von Buchstabenschrift die Rede, sondern vom Einritzen gewisser Symbole und Zeichen, welche bildlich andeuteten, der Ueberbringer solle sterben. Es giebt im Homer noch eine ähnliche Stelle, an welcher das composit. [[ἐπιγράφω]] ganz in demselben Sinne gebraucht wird, wie Iliad. 6, 169 das simpl. [[γράφω]], nämlich Iliad. 7, 187, wo der Zusammenhang noch deutlicher als 6, 169 zeigt, daß keine Allen gemeinsame Buchstabenschrift erwähnt werde, sondern bloß ein Symbol, ein Zeichen; nämlich nur derjenige selbst versteht es, welcher es einritzte. Beide Stellen, an denen, wenn auch keine Buchstabenschrift, doch eine Vorstufe derselben erwähnt wird, Hiad. 6, 169 und 7, 187, gehören zu Lachmanns sechstem Liede; ein Umstand, den Lachmann selber in den Betrachtungen über Homers Ilias S. 22 bei der Abgränzung dieses seines sechsten Liedes nicht erwähnt, an den er auch bei seiner Untersuchung, nach mündlichen Mittheilungen, nicht gedacht hat, den er aber, als man ihn von anderer Seite mündlich auf denselben hinwies, als sehr wichtig und als einen neuen Beweis der ursprünglichen Zusammengehörigkeit beider Bücher 6. u. 7. ansah. Sofort aber verwahrte er sich, u. mit vollem Rechte, gegen die Ansicht, als ob aus dem γράφειν des sechsten Liedes geschlossen werden könne, daß dies Lied junger als irgend ein anderer Theil der Homerischen Dichtungen sei. In dieser Stelle ist nicht von Buchstabenschrift die Rede, sondern vom Einritzen gewisser Symbole und Zeichen, welche bildlich andeuteten, der Ueberbringer solle sterben. Es giebt im Homer noch eine ähnliche Stelle, an welcher das composit. ἐπιγράφω ganz in demselben Sinne gebraucht wird, wie Iliad. 6, 169 das simpl. γράφω, nämlich Iliad. 7, 187, wo der Zusammenhang noch deutlicher als 6, 169 zeigt, daß keine Allen gemeinsame Buchstabenschrift erwähnt werde, sondern bloß ein Symbol, ein Zeichen; nämlich nur derjenige selbst versteht es, welcher es einritzte. Beide Stellen, an denen, wenn auch keine Buchstabenschrift, doch eine Vorstufe derselben erwähnt wird, Hiad. 6, 169 und 7, 187, gehören zu Lachmanns sechstem Liede; ein Umstand, den Lachmann selber in den Betrachtungen über Homers Ilias S. 22 bei der Abgränzung dieses seines sechsten Liedes nicht erwähnt, an den er auch bei seiner Untersuchung, nach mündlichen Mittheilungen, nicht gedacht hat, den er aber, als man ihn von anderer Seite mündlich auf denselben hinwies, als sehr wichtig und als einen neuen Beweis der ursprünglichen Zusammengehörigkeit beider Bücher 6. u. 7. ansah. Sofort aber verwahrte er sich, u. mit vollem Rechte, gegen die Ansicht, als ob aus dem γράφειν des sechsten Liedes geschlossen werden könne, daß dies Lied junger als irgend ein anderer Theil der Homerischen Dichtungen sei. Es sei eben nur ein anderer Dichter. Ueber die ganze vielbesprochene Angelegenheit s. Wolf. Prolegg. p. 40–94 Lehrs. Aristarch. p. 103. 348 Sengebusch Homer. dissert. 2 p. 41 sqq. Die Thatsache, daß im Homer von Buchstabenschrift nicht die Rede sei, hat schon Aristarch festgestellt, dessen Metalepsis ξέειν ist: s. Schell. Aristonic. Iliad. 6, 169. 176. 7, 175. 187.
