Etymology: One compares γριφᾶσθαι γράφειν. Λάκωνες. οἱ δε ξύειν καὶ ἀμύσσειν H. The ἀ- would remain unexplained. Note that the word is attested very late. The form in -να suggests Pre-Greek.
