Frisk Etymological English
(ἄϊκλον)
Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: evening meal of the Spartans (Epich.).
Other forms: <συν>αιγλία = συναικλία; λυκαιχλίας· ὁ λυκόβρωτος (-βροτος codd.)
Derivatives: ἀναίκλεια ἄδειπνα H. Also αἶκνον δεῖπνον H., Suid.; ἐπάϊκλα Pl.
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Fur. 139 points to εἶκλον δεῖπνον H. and εἰκλεῖ δειπνεῖ H. and compares ἰκνείαν τροφεῖα H. and ἰκνεῖος τροφεύς. `Ρόδιοι H. and rightly concludes to a substr. word, which may be formulated (ἀ-)Ϝικλ\/ν- (not ἐ-Ϝικ- as there was no (prothetic) vowel ε); for the proth. vowels cf. ἀέροπ- \/ μέροπ- (the change between λ and ν may be secondary). (Comparison with αἰκάζει καλεῖ H. or αἰκάλλω is completely in the air.).
Frisk Etymology German
αἶκλον: (ἄϊκλον)
{aĩklon}
Grammar: n.
Meaning: Abendmahl der Spartiaten (Epich., Alkm. u. a.).
Derivative: Davon ἀναίκλεια· ἄδειπνα H. Daneben αἶκνον· δεῖπνον H., Suid.
Etymology : Vgl. αἰκάζει· καλεῖ H. Sonst ungedeutet. Ob αἰκάλλω schmeicheln damit zu verbinden ist, scheint fraglich.
