[ΕΤΥΜΟΛ. Αβέβαιης ετυμολ. Εκφραστική λ., όπως δηλώνει το -αι- του θ. (πρβλ. λαιός, σκαιός) και το επίθημα -ρός (πρβλ. αισχρός, φαιδρός). Η λ. συνδέεται πιθ. με μεσσαπικά - ιλλυρικά ανθρωπωνύμια Ledrus, Laidius, Σκερδι-λαΐδας, καθώς και με λιθουαν. pa-laidas «χαλαρός, ελεύθερος», pa-laida και leidžiu «λύνω, αφήνω».
