διὸ δὴ πᾶς ἀνὴρ σπουδαῖος τῶν ὄντων σπουδαίων πέρι πολλοῦ δεῖ μὴ γράψας ποτὲ ἐν ἀνθρώποις εἰς φθόνον καὶ ἀπορίαν καταβαλεῖ → And this is the reason why every serious man in dealing with really serious subjects carefully avoids writing, lest thereby he may possibly cast them as a prey to the envy and stupidity of the public | Therefore every man of worth, when dealing with matters of worth, will be far from exposing them to ill feeling and misunderstanding among men by committing them to writing

[ᾰν] (ἀλφαίνω EM72.39, Aët.13.133), Hom. only in aor. 2 ἦλφον, cf. IG1.53a15, Plu.2.668c: pres., E.Med.297, Fr.326 (no-where else in Trag.), Ar.Fr.324, Eup.258, Men.362:—

   A bring in, yield, fetch, ἵνα μοι βίοτον πολὺν ἄλφοι Od.17.250; ὁ δ' ὑμῖν μυρίον ὦνον ἄλφοι 15.452, cf. 20.383; ἑκατόμβοιον δέ τοι ἦλφον Il.21.79; ὁπόσην ἂν ἄλφῃ μίσθωσιν τὸ τέμενος IG l.c., cf. Plu. l.c.: metaph., φθόνον ἀλφάνειν to incur envy, E.Med.297.    II = ἐναλλάσσω, change, Aët. l.c. (cf. Skt. arghás 'price').

[Seite 111] VLL. auch ἀλφαίνω, erkl. εὑρίσκω, Hom. nur aor. 2, viermal, Iliad. 21, 79 ἑκατόμβοιον δέ τοι ἦλφον, brachte ich dir ein; Od. 15, 453 ὁ δ' ὕμιν μυρίον ὦνον ἄλφοι; 17, 250 ἵνα μοι βίοτον πολὺν ἄλφοι; 20, 383 τοὺς ξείνους ἐν νηὶ πολυκλήιδι βαλόντες ἐς Σικελοὺς πέμψωμεν, ὅθεν κέ τοι ἄξιον ἄλφοι, der sing. auffallend, die Verse 381 – 383 sind unächt, das ἄλφοι war formelhaft geworden u. ward vom Nachdichter unpassend gebraucht, intransit. = einkommen möchte, oder mit Bezug auf den einen der ξεῖνοι, welcher zu der Rede Anlaß gab. – Praes. Eur. Med. 297 φθόνον πρὸς ἀστῶν ἀλφάνουσι, sich zuziehen; frgmtt. comicc. bei Suid.; Arist. frg. εἶπέν μ' ὁ κήρυξ, οὗτος ἀλφάνει heißt wohl: der hat es erstanden; B. A. 382 erkl. εὑρίσκειν u. führt aus Eupol. an ἀποκηρύξει τις ὅ τι ἂν ἀλφάνῃ, quovis pretio.
