οἴκημα, Hsch.

Spanish (DGE)

-ου, τό casa Hsch., cf. βαυρία, βαυριόθεν.

Frisk Etymological English

Grammatical information: n.
Meaning: βύριον οἴκημα; βυριόθεν οἴκοθεν H. Cf. εὐβύριον τὸ εὔοικον εἴρηται, ὅτι κατὰ την βαυρίαν η κατὰ Μεσσαπίους σημαίνει οἰκίαν (EM 389,25); and βαυριόθεν = οἴκοθεν (Cleon Sic. 2).
Derivatives: Perhaps βυρμός σταθμός H., s. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 3.
Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Messap.
Etymology: Messapian word, seen in Germanic: OIc. būr n., OHG, OE būr m. cottage, room (PGm. *būra-); Pok. 149. With other ablaut βαυρία, βᾶρις (s. vv.). S.Krahe IF 57, 116. Supposed to be r-derivatives of a word for live, dwell, s. φύω.

Frisk Etymology German

βύριον: {búrion}
Meaning: οἴκημα, βυριόθεν· οἴκοθεν H., (EM).
Etymology: Messapisches Wort, das sich bis auf das i̯o-Suffix im Germanischen wiederfindet: ano. būr n., ahd. ags. būr m. Hütte, Zimmer, Käfig (urg. *būra-). Hierher wahrscheinlich auch βυρμός· σταθμός H., s. v. Blumenthal Hesychst. 3. Daneben mit anderem Ablaut βαυρία, βᾶρις (s. dd.). S. auch Krahe IF 57, 116. — Alles r-Ableitungen eines Worts für wohnen, s. φύω.
