Frisk Etymological English

2
Grammatical information: m.
Meaning: pitfall for wild beasts (Democr. 122, pl.)
Other forms: -ον n. (H., Phot., Suid.)
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: The often popular words in -θος (Chantraine Form. 366 ff., Schwyzer 510 f.), although in great part undoubtedly inherited, can only rarely be morphologically classified. If prop. "hollow(ing)", λάπαθος can be connected with the diff. built λαπαρός, λαπάσσω etc.; further analysis unknown. S. λάπαθον 1.

Frisk Etymology German

λάπαθος: 2.
{lápathos}
Forms: -ον n. (H., Phot., Suid.)
Grammar: m. (Demokr. 122, pl.),
Meaning: Fallgrube für wilde Tiere.
Etymology: Die oft volkstümlichen Wörter auf -θος (Chantraine Form. 366 ff., Schwyzer 510 f.), obwohl großenteils unzweifelhaft altererbt, lassen sich nur selten morphologisch glatt einordnen. Wenn eigentlich "Aushöhlung", reiht sich λάπαθος an die anders gebildeten λαπαρός, λαπάσσω usw.; die nähere Analyse bleibt offen.
