[ΕΤΥΜΟΛΟΓΙΑ Ο τ. Γνίφων πιθ. < Κνίφων, ανθρωπωνύμιο -παρωνύμιο (πρβλ. γναφεύς -κναφεύς, γνάπτω -κνάπτω) < κνιπός «φιλάργυρος» (πρβλ. κνίψ, κνιπός), ενώ κατ' άλλους πρόκειται για αρχικό τ. που ανάγεται σε ρίζα gn- bh- και συνδέεται με λιθ. gny- bu, μσν. κάτω γερμ. knīpen, αρχ. νορβ. knifr].
