Ggstz von ἀθάνατος, Beiwort der Menschen; auch allein, substantivisch, der Sterbliche, der Mensch; eben so die Tragg., von denen Eur. auch θνητὸς οὖσα verbindet, Ion 973, wie I. A. 901; φρονοῦσα θνητά, was den Sterblichen ziemt, Soph. Tr. 473; ἔργματ' οὐχὶ θνητά, nicht das Werk eines Menschen, Eur. Bacch. 1022; Ggstz von θεῖος Plat. Phaedr. 80 a, von θεός Conv. 202 a; auch übh. ζῶα πάντα θνητὰ καὶ φυτά, Soph. 265 c, wie Her. sagt πάντων τῶν ἡμεῖς ἴδμεν θνητῶν ἐξ ἐλαχίστου μέγιστον, vom Krokodil, 2, 68, und vom Pferde πάντων τῶν θνητῶν τὸ τάχιστον 1, 216; also übh. = lebendes Wesen, das dem Tode verfallen muß.
